The professional standards framework
Our standards describe what good English language teaching looks like in practice. They give teachers something to aim for and give learners and employers confidence in the profession.
The four domains
The framework groups professional practice into four connected domains, each with descriptors at three career stages.
1. Knowledge
Understanding of language, how it is learned, and the contexts learners come from.
2. Planning & teaching
Designing and delivering effective, inclusive lessons that respond to learners' needs.
3. Assessment & feedback
Monitoring progress fairly and giving feedback that moves learning forward.
4. Professionalism
Ethical practice, continuing development and contribution to the wider profession.
Code of practice
All members agree to a short code of practice that sets out the conduct expected of an ELT professional: honesty with learners, fair assessment, safeguarding, respect for colleagues and a commitment to keep developing.
The code is deliberately practical. It is not a legal document; it is a shared understanding of how we work, and it underpins the trust that membership represents.
How standards are reviewed
The Standards Committee reviews the framework on a published cycle. Proposed changes are consulted on with members before they take effect, so the standards reflect real classrooms rather than abstract theory.

The framework is not just a document. It shapes everything the Council does.
